Memory is one of the most essential part of human brain. Without memory the brain is like a void. Human memory involves the ability to both preserve and recover informations we have learnt or experienced. The brain is just like a library of memories. And memories are too precious.

There are several types of memories

Memory can be of different types. Short-term memory only lasts 20 to 30 seconds. It stores information temporarily and then either dismisses it or transfers it to long-term memory. It’s also called working memory. A normal person can remember 7 bits of information at a stretch.

Long-term memories are a bit more complex than our short-term memories. Anything that happened more than a few minutes ago would be stored in long-term memory. It helps us remember general knowledge, objects related to us and procedures. In fact it is divided into multiple types.

Memory formation needs attention

Attention is first step of memory formation. If its not there it’s impossible to memorize something. Most of the problems in memory are due to problems in attention. Many fickle minded children face difficulty in remembering due to absence of attention. Even many young working people complain of memory loss. Most of them are due to lack of attention.

Memory is formed and destroyed daily

Many memories are formed by new connections in our memory cells. In the human brain, there are trillions of synapses forming a complex and flexible network that allows us to feel, behave, and think. It is the changes in the synaptic connections in areas of the brain such as the cerebral cortex and hippocampus that is associated with the learning and retention of new information.

You can improve your memory by learning

Learning and revision strengthen the synapses of memory cells better. Learning makes new connections in brain. Exercising your cognitive skills by playing brain games is a fun and effective way to boost your memory.Games that challenge your brain may help you

Rehearsing information, employing mnemonics, and other memorization strategies are the best ways to overcome minor memory problems. By learning how to use these strategies effectively, you can train your brain to function in new ways.

Sleep helps in storing memory

Sleep is a great necessity for memory consolidation. A good night’s sleep helps the brain relax. It cleans unnecessary memories and helps in storing necessary memory. In addition to aiding in memory, sleep also plays an essential role in learning new information.

So try to sleep perfectly for a better memory. Studies have consistently associated sufficient sleep with better memory performance. You’re also likely to perform better on memory tests if you’re well rested than if you’re sleep deprived.

Stress and depression affects memory

Stress can affect how memories are formed. When stressed, people have a more difficult time creating short-term memories and turning those short-term memories into long-term memories, meaning that it is more difficult to learn when stressed. It can affect our attention.

If we are stressed during an event, we may have more difficulty accurately remembering the details of the event later. This is part of why eye-witness testimony is so unreliable, people can be absolutely sure they saw something a certain way, but this doesn’t mean that they are correct.

Exercise and meditation can delay memory decay

In a similar way to muscles, the brain needs regular use to stay healthy. Mental workouts are just as essential to gray matter as other factors, and challenging the mind can help it grow and expand, which may improve memory.

Physical exercise has a direct impact on brain health. Regular exercise reduces the risk of cognitive decline with age and protects the brain against degeneration.

Mindfulness meditation may help improve memory. Many studies show meditation improves brain function, reduces markers of brain degeneration, and improves both working memory and long term memory.

Memory is very essential part of our life. Without memory our life is worthless. We should have sound knowledge of our memory. If someone is facing memory loss it should be dealt carefully. Consult a Neurologist as early as you can, because more delay can aggravate the problems. Sometimes it becomes irreversible.
