It has been 4 months of 2020. But still we are suffering heavily due to corona pandemic. Offices are closed. Economy is at its lowest. Death toll increasing. Many countries in lockdown. Hospitals are loaded. Both developed and developing countries are suffering. Hopeless situation prevails everywhere.


It’s obvious many of us feel depressed, anxious. The jobs are at stake. No outing. Fear of contact of disease making all of us apprehensive. We are fighting an invisible enemy. For many children and adolescents it is being more difficult to cope up. Schools closed. Examinations are delayed. No outing. Fear and anxiety about the disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in both adults and children.

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations.

People who may respond more strongly to the stress of a crisis include

  • Older people who are more prone to severe disease.
  • People with chronic diseases who are at higher risk for COVID-19
  • Children and teens
  • Health care professionals and patient attendants.
  • People who have mental health conditions including problems with substance use

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
  • Unexplained headache and body pain.
  • In children excess irritability, behavioral change, change in eating pattern etc.

Statistics say there is steep rise in mental illness after corona pandemic started. The corona-fear has created bigger pandemic than the disease itself. Many studies say it has wide effect on mental health of young people.

But I have a simple question: is it worthy to be so much anxious!!!!!! The answer is a ‘BIG NO’

It’s not the only pandemic

Earth has endured many pandemic far bigger than the COVID-19. Plague, pox, AIDS has claimed significant portion of population of earth. The Spanish Flu in 1918 killed around 100 million people. In our lifetime 10 years before we saw swine flu, which killed around 5 lakh people globally with around 20% of world population infected. But we didn’t know so much due to less use of social media.

It’s not much dangerous pandemic

The mortality rate of COVID-19 is much less compared to pox, ebola, MERS. It has less effect on healthy young people. Even in old age it’s mortality is below 20%. Recently 103-year-old Chinese woman has made a full recovery from COVID-19 after being treated for 6 days in Wuhan, China, becoming the oldest patient to beat the disease

The fatality rate is around 4%

Vaccine is under production

Recently the vaccine trial of Covid-19 is successful in mice. The virus is not changing much after its origin. New vaccine is very likely to come soon. (Link)

China has controlled transmission

Now the epicenter in Wuhan has significant decrease in transmission. So the temporary hospitals are closed. It indicates the pandemic will not be like previous flu pandemics, which continued for years together. (Link)

South Korea’s drop in new cases

By active surveillance and contact tracing with isolation, south Korea has fought strongly against the corona. It shows other countries, that stringent social distancing and active surveillance can decrease transmission. (Link)

Plasma therapy

Passive immunity treatment by serum from recovered patients decrease virus load. It leads to another dimension of therapy by immunoglobulin. (Link)

Malaria and BCG

It’s thought by huge numbers of scientists that the BCG vaccinated people and malaria endemic area have either less cases found or the virus is not so lethal. Researches are on way.

So let’s forget anxiety and stress and unite against corona. Now let’s measure anxiety with in us. There is a scoring. Please asses yourself by asking the questions to yourself.
